We worked long and hard to get the car into a state that would be ready for our first test day today!  This past week we finalized the floor, firewall, seat, harness, steering and driveline.

We packed the car up in the trailer and towed it over to our test site in Amsterdam.  The car reached a top speed of 23.7 mph!  We brought the car into the woods and tested it on a steep hill as well as in some mud and a stream.  The car did great and there are minimal adjustments that we need to make!

Pictures from the first test day can be seen below.

As our winter term comes to an end, we have made significant progress on this years car!  This past week we have finished making our seat.

We are also really thankful to receive this award.  Thanks SAE International!

This weekend was busy for the Union baja racing team!  Two days of building led to significant project on this year’s brand new car.  We were able to strip last year’s car of all its suspension and drivetrain parts, mount and weld the front suspension on the new car, plan the steering rack mounts and steering shaft, get the shift cable mounts on and get the harness bar lifted up and into place.  This upcoming week we hope to execute our plans for the steering rack mounts and steering shaft.  The new car is almost ready to roll!

Our team captain’s day off from work meant more work for the Union baja racing team! We would like to thank some of our sponsors this year – Union College Student Activities, the engineering departments, Anta Electric, Pike, and Jim Taylor at Taylor Made.

Today we were able to install rear suspension and determine how much we need to modify our axle shafts. Lastly, we would like to thank  team member Kentaro Barhydt for all of his design work!

The first meeting of the term has just finished.  The team took its first look at the new frame!  Tasks have been delegated and a timeline has been created to keep members of the team on schedule for completion.  We look forward to a productive term!

Materials for the frame have arrived and progress has begun!  Members of the team have been working diligently throughout winter break to make this happen.  The bottom half of the frame is starting to take shape!

Union College Baja has officially been registered for competition!  This year we will be attending Baja SAE Kansas which occurs from May 25 to May 28, 2017 in the town of Pittsburg.  We are car number 17 this year which will be a huge benefit to the team.  Having a number below 50 means that we will be able to fit in a second safety inspection on the first day, if the need arises.  With the competition registered for, the next step is to book flights and hotel rooms!

It is week three of the term and progress is going really well on the car!  This year we are building an entirely new car from the ground up.  Although this will be a lot of work, we know that it will be worth it in the end.

Members of the club have been split into groups based on the different components of the car.  The CVT and drivetrain have been taken apart successfully and the rollers have been removed.  The steering team has taken their necessary measurements and will begin work on that component within the next few weeks.  The rear frame has been completely redesigned and a material list has been made.  This will allow the group working on suspension to get started.  Lastly, we were able to order the RaceCapture with a discount!
